First mate on a sport fishing boat is a service industry job - meaning they do not get a salary - but instead work for tips. So, tipping the first mate is the customary way to show your appreciation for their effort in catching fish and keeping you safe and comfortable throughout the day. Keep in mind that they are preparing the boat 1-2 hours in the morning before you show up for your charter and then again cleaning the boat for 1-2 hours after we return to the marina. In addition to this time, quite a few hours are spent sharpening hooks, calibrating reels, and maintaining the boat. While you may never directly see the many tasks that the first mate performs before and after your trip, I can assure you that each one of these directly affects your comfort, safety, and daily catch. A typical first mate tip is 15-20% of the total cost of the charter. A Captain's tip is is an additional thanks for any exceptional services provided.
Remainder of day's charter fee must be paid in cash in advance of leaving the dock.
A 4-week notice is required if you must cancel your charter or your deposit will be forfeited.
Cancellation by the Captain prior to leaving the dock due to weather or any other reason results in your choice of a full refund of your deposit or rescheduling of your trip.
NO FISH - NO PAY (the "fine print") if your charter catches no fish on your entire charter, you do not pay anything for the trip. That simple!
Your charter has started once the boat leaves the dock.
